Dorchester on Market Day: Big name stores, chef-led restaurants, cafes, bars and bistros, museums, attractions, glorious gardens, river walks and a Roman Town House, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Dorset’s county town. Dorchester is world famous for its strong connection with the writer and poet Thomas Hardy. Dorchester is of course the ‘Casterbridge’ featured in his novels and you will find references to Hardy throughout the town. You can visit his cottage birthplace at nearby Higher Bockhampton and his sophisticated Victorian townhouse on the outskirts of town, Max Gate. Both properties are owned by the National Trust. There are plenty of other attractions in the town to see too including museums dedicated to Tutankhamun, Teddy Bears, Military History and more!
