Polesden Lacey (National Trust)

Polesden Lacey was the luxurious weekend retreat of Dame Margaret Greville, one of the most influential socialites of the twentieth century. Set in the rolling Surrey Hills overlooking ancient woodland and pastures, yet within easy reach of London, Polesden Lacey was a place where Royalty and the rich and famous could escape everyday life, relax and let their hair down.

What you can be seen in the gardens today echoes the glorious heyday of the Edwardian period and Mrs Greville’s time at Polesden. Below the Herbaceous Borders are four croquet lawns which were used for lawn tennis. Guests, including Sir Winston Churchill, played golf on Mrs Greville’s golf course. Visitors sauntered through the walled Rose Garden, perhaps enjoying the sight of bees and butterflies among the flowers on a warm summer’s day.
